The Warner bros production, Good Fellas, the huge gangster film out in 1995, Good Fellas. The opening sequence produced by Saul Bass is very intriguing, me as a member of the audience was attracted from the very first credit that appeared, at the very start the credits appeared on a black screen, but not as basic as it sounds, the first credit for example speeds past making the sound of a car, then appears a little smaller at the center of the screen, the writing is plain white and surrounded by nothing but a plain black background, this continuous for a few more credits, introducing the film. The next part of the opening sequence is a pan shot of a car driving in the dark, down a road that is not busy, the camera speeds past the car, then another credit appears saying New York 1970. The opening sequence then introduces the three characters in the car; they are all dressed smartly in black, one driving, who wipes sweat away form his forehead, this could mean that he is nervous for some unknown reason, one in the passenger seat who in which is asleep, this suggest that they have been travelling for some time now, and the other at the back.
Then out of no where, a banging noise appears, the driver is alert of this and wakes the others, asking what it is to a character called Jimmy, this may suggest that the driver looks up to this character, or feels that this character is more responsible than the other at the back of the car. The characters start to become more aware of the noise and want to know were it is coming from, but the driver is a bit more alert, and panics a little. The passenger at the back reconsiders that is it nearer to him. The next shot is of the three men dressed in black walking out the car and towards the boot they go, one of which is carrying a spade, the only light that shows the characters is the red light at the back of the car. this is rather effective to me, because it shows the pure evil side, this suggests hell, because that is what red represents.
The shot following this is of the boot, the noise is much louder now, the camera slowly zooms closer to the boot, so now the audience and the characters know were the sound is coming from. The next shot is of the three men, highlighted by the red light reflecting upon them, the one on the right (the driver) is half on the shot half of, so this might suggest that he doesn't want to get involved or feels uncomfortable about what is going to happen next, the camera zooms and focuses more on the other two, in which one pulls out a knife form his blazer pocket, and both characters in the shot look at one and another, the other character is holding a spade.
The one with the spade nods, directing the driver to open the boot, the man uneasily does this and steps back, this may be because he doesn't want to look into the victim in the boots eye, or because he wants to stay out of the other two's way; the victim lay wearing a white Indian outfit, covered in red blood that comes from his own body, his looks in pain; the man holding the knife spends no time looking, and viciously stabs the man in the boots continuously, as if he is mad at him, or feels much hatred, maybe this man has betrayed him, or suspects him. The victim is now dead, as the man steps away the one that once had the spade steps in and shoots the man 4 times.
The following shot is of the blood that is caused from what they just did, the driver steps in, and closes the boot; a voice over speaks saying "as far as i can remember i have always wanted to be a Gangster" as he slams the boot shut some jazz music appears, the man looks forward of himself, as if he is imagining what he has just whiteness, the shine upon his face, as the light hits one side of him, casting a red light, this may be a suggestion that half of him wants this, and the other half is scared.
Saul Bass formed/created the credits for this scene, and put it all together, overall i feel this is a very effective and catchy opening.
